Hi! I’m Shelly Porter, the artist behind Shelly Porter Artworks.
I lived in Corpus Christi, TX all my life until two years ago when my husband, daughter and I moved to a suburb in Houston. It has been a challenge meeting and making new friends in a new city. Our daughter just graduated from UT Austin and lives there, so there are no more scholastic avenues to meet new faces. I’ve had to find other options and also have lucked out with some really nice neighbors. Needless to say, I have had a lot of time to myself and that is when I set up my Etsy shop!
I have a degree in Interior Design from UT Austin, but the business/sales end of it outweighed the creative part for me. I have been artistic my entire life and really and truly just wanted to do art.
I started painting seriously almost 20 years ago after a cancer diagnoses and surgery. I am basically a self-taught painter and have found my way from realism, symbolism and religious art to contemporary and non-objective art. I am currently focusing on the emotional, spiritual and psychological aspects that color and pattern have on the viewer. I really find a deep connection with my spiritual side when painting. I feel connected to something greater than myself and whole. I feel as if my soul is able to speak on the paper or canvas as I work, so I began to call my work “Soul Speak”.
I definitely think that finding a place to connect and build relationships within the vast ETSY community is a total must. It helps keep me focused, enthusiastic and creating. Being on the WAUTeam has been a blessing from out of the blue….I am so glad to be a part of this friendly, supportive, enthusiastic and super talented group of artists, artisans and sellers! I am grateful to the WAU team leaders for their tireless effort and energy in keeping things organized, fun and a positive experience for all.
